Chapter 11

“I can’t leave.” At this point, Dima was just repeating himself and talking to the stillness in the car, because Xavier was hellbent on ignoring him. “You gonna tell me where we’re going?” Even if he did have an idea.

Xavier didn’t answer, though his knuckles did clench tighter around the steering wheel. He’d waved away the driver and bodyguards, choosing to drive them to a destination that became clearer when they hit Eastern Parkway.

“The club?” Dima twisted in his seat, narrowing his gaze at his husband. “We’re in crisis fucking mode and you’re taking me to the goddamn club?”

Xavier didn’t look at him.

What the fuck? “So you’re ignoring me now?” His face hurt from the pummeling he took from Aleks’ fists and his back burned with the nicks from broken glass that had pressed into his flesh. The fear and panic hadn’t left him. In fact, it’d ratcheted up higher once he realized Chantal wasn’t responsible for the fire. Or the pictures that kept showing up at their door. He was torn between wanting to keep Xavier at his side, within sight and arms’ reach, and stashing him somewhere where nobody could find him.

But the man he’d married wasn’t a coward. Xavier was content to let Dima handle his business, to be the one out there in the streets, but he couldn’t forget who Xavier Storm truly was. Who he’d been when they first met.

“Xavier.” Dima didn’t move once they pulled into their designated parking spot at the club. After what he’d done tonight to Aleks and Chantal, he wanted Xavier’s arms around him. It had been a necessary thing, but by no means easy, and he hurt for his friend. He felt like shit for what he’d had to do.

“Get out the car, Rush.”

“I need—”

Xavier moved so fast, Dima didn’t have time to make out his hand before it snatched him by the throat, yanking him forward. “I know what you need.” Oh, his voice was so soft. So calm and even. Only his eyes gave him away, molten darkness pulling at Dima like the most inviting abyss. He ached to throw himself into those dark depths, let Xavier anchor him, control him. But they didn’t have the luxury. Not tonight.

“Xavier.” His voice wobbled. “We can’t—”

Xavier’s free hand moved, carrying a glint Dima didn’t comprehend until the blade was at his throat, pressing into his skin. He almost fucking keened. All his nerve endings came online at once, damn near overwhelming him. He stared into that steady gaze promising respite, escape.

“Go on.” The grate of Xavier’s words pebbled Dima’s skin. His nipples, even his balls, tightened. “Tell me what we can’t.” The knife sank deeper into Dima’s flesh.

Blood rushed through his veins like a sprinter, thundering in his ears. The way he loved the man in front of him, the one with the knife to his throat and the most depraved promises in his eyes. The way Dima loved him. “I love you.” It escaped on the most
